In Microsoft Dynamics CRM, when you create your organization, you need to designate a Base Currency. Once it is set, it cannot be changed; however, since Dynamics CRM supports multiple currencies, you and other users in your organization can specify their default Currency.
While the Base Currency remains constant, aspects of it can be edited. In this lesson, I’ll explain how Base Currencies can be edited and how to prevent certain security roles from making unwanted changes.
I begin by navigating to Settings > Business > Business Management, and then click Currencies. As you can see, my organization supports two Currencies: the US Dollar and the Euro. I’ll click US Dollar since it is my Base Currency.
The US Dollar record opens. As you can see, the Currency Code and Currency Conversion fields are greyed out, but other aspects can be edited. The field that I want to focus on is the Currency Symbol field. The symbol in this field is the dollar sign. Note that it does not have to contain a symbol; it can be any combination of characters. To demonstrate this, I’ll replace the dollar symbol with the word “dollars:”. I then click Save and Close, and navigate to the Workplace module and open the Opportunity entity.
Notice that the word “dollars:” now appears in front of the monetary values. It is important to know about this feature in case the Currency symbol is changed to an unwanted symbol. Fortunately, this does not impact your data, is easy to fix, and can also be prevented through configuring privileges for certain Security Roles. By default, the Vice President of Sales, Sales Manager and CEO-Business Manager Security Roles all have full privileges for the Currency entity.
Security Roles can be configured by navigating to Settings > System > Administration, and then clicking Security Roles. If I click the Vice President of Sales Security Role to open it, I can navigate to the Business Management tab to view the Currency privileges. Understanding which privileges grant users the ability to change the Currency Symbol is important in preventing potential confusion.
